What the Mountains Taught Us: Why Appalachian Knowledge Is Worth Preserving
There is a kind of knowledge that doesn't always make it into books. It gets passed across kitchen tables, worked into gardens, carried into the woods, and tucked into the stories our grandparents tell when we take the time to listen.
Here in Appalachia, generations before us learned how to make do with what the mountains gave them. They preserved food because winter was coming. They mended instead of replacing. They knew which plants grew along the creek bank, which ones had a place in the family medicine cabinet. much of that knowledge wasn't considered anything special at the time. It was simply part of knowing how to live.
But somewhere along the way we started losing pieces of it.
From the Ridge is my attempt to hold onto some of those pieces.
More Than a Shop
Balsam Ridge Traditions may be a small business, but I've come to realize that what I'm building here is also a kind of living archive.
There are plants growing all around us whose names, stories, and traditional uses were once common knowledge. There are skills our grandparents considered ordinary that many of us are now having to learn again. There are recipes, remedies, methods, and bits of mountain wisdom that can disappear surprisingly quickly when no one takes the time to write them down.
I don't want to see that happen.
So, From the Ridge will be a place to gather some of those thing... to share what I'm learning, document what I'm able to preserve, and hopefully encourage others to look a little closer at the knowledge tucked into their own families and communities.
What You'll Find From the Ridge
Some days, we'll be talking about the plants growing right outside our doors- their history, how to identify them, and the ways they've traditionally been used in Appalachian homes.
Other days we might bring you into the kitchen while something is being canned or preserved, behind the scenes while I'm making a batch from Balsam Ridge, or into a piece of mountain history I've been digging into.
There will be herbal knowledge here, but this won't only be an herbalism journal. I want room for the skills, stories, recipes, traditions, and everyday resourcefulness that have shaped life in these mountains.
And when I come across something worth remembering, I want this to be a place where we write them down.
Stewarding What We've Been Given
My faith is woven into this work, too. I believe God created a world full of things worth knowing, caring for, and using wisely. The more I learn about the plants around us and the generations who learned to live alongside them, the more that belief is reinforced.
For me, preserving this knowledge isn't about romanticizing the past or pretending the old way was always the better way. It's about respecting what came before us, continuing to learn, and being a good steward of knowledge that is worth carrying forward.
That's what I hope From the Ridge becomes- a place where old knowledge and new learning can sit at the same table.
So, welcome to the Ridge. I'm glad you're here.
